We want to enjoy our cut flowers for as long as possible!
Floral preservatives are a must for extending the life of your fresh picked or “fresh picked up from the market or florist” flowers. Once picked those stems and leaves begin to decay. Floral preservatives will slow that process down!
You can always buy floral preservatives, but sometimes it is fun and economical to make your own. Here are a couple of recipes to try…
RECIPE # 1
2 Cups lemon-lime carbonated beverage (Sprite or 7 Up)
1/2 teaspoon household chlorine bleach
2 cups warm water
NOTE: My friend and Master Rosarian, Sandy Ford, told me she uses Listerine Mouth Wash instead of bleach. It works, smells better and will not stain your dark table covers at rose shows or whatever you are wearing.
RECIPE # 2
Equal Parts of …
Lemon-lime soda & cool water
And, a penny
WONDERING WHAT’S IN THOSE LITTLE PACKAGES OF PRESERVATIVES?
Sugar (Nutrition for the blooms)
Bleach (To battle bacteria)
Citric Acid (To lower the PH of the water)
Have fun! And, enjoy your blooms!
