Memorial Day Morning Garden Walk and Memories…

Mr. G and I look forward to Memorial Day each year. We are up early with our garden to-do list in hand, our race-day snacks and our radio to listen to the Indy 500.

Freedom isn’t Free…
Even though so much action is going on in our city, here in my suburban garden all is peaceful, quiet and fairly cool this morning. I even feel a little breeze. It is a good time for me to remember those who have bravely fought for our country in the past and to pray for those who continue to do so today. I am very grateful for the freedoms I have and appreciate those who make the sacrifices on our behalf.

Isn’t he so handsome?

My dad served in WW II on the USS Halford (DD-480). He and his friends were drafted during their Jr year in high school to serve. I can’t imagine what it was like for the families to watch their young sons leave home to head into harms way.

My dad tells the story that as a boy he never remembers his parents being outwardly sentimental until the day he got on the bus to head to the navy. To this day he says he can hear the sounds of his dad crying as they pulled away.

Thank you Daddy for your sacrifice for us!

JANUARY 2013

My dad went home to heaven on Monday, January 14 … some of his final words were that he could see my mom and she had a cup of coffee ready for him. It had been 23 years since she had fixed him a cup of coffee. She was known for her coffee. You can read about her and her “coffee culture” here.
