2015 Top 5 Roses

2015 was a beautiful rose year in my neck of the woods. To pick only 5 roses from this year provides quite a challenge. But, I do want to get down to some of the top performers in my Zone 5 garden and share some standouts with you.

Rose Buzz_Top 5_2015

Dick Clark – Grandiflora: This was the 3rd year in my garden and it was a blooming machine. Staying healthy all the way to October. Very little disease. I have to say the first year this rose was not impressive in the blooming department but that was all forgotten this year! Many roses do not show their best self until the third year. Maybe you’ve heard this about perennials and shrubs…

1st Year: Sleep
2nd Year: Creep
3rd Year: LEAP!

So, it is best to give them 3 years in your garden to prove what they can do and be for you. This rose was hybridizing giants Tom Carruth and Christian Bedard.

Petit Pink – Shrub: This easy care shrub from the Proven Winners OSO Happy series bloomed all summer with no sign of disease. Looks good up close and from far away. The long-lasting blooms are small—about an inch in diameter.

Little Mischief – Shrub: (Easy Elegance Collection) These adorable deep pink sprays look amazing in the garden as well as in arrangements. I should know… arranging these little blooms put me in the winners circle at our local district rose show!

Music Box – Shrub: (Easy Elegance Collection): This is a shrub rose with a pretty little bud and a hybrid tea like bloom. True to the series name, this rose is easy and elegant and completes the package with a lovely fragrance.

Moje Hammerburg – Rugosa: This rose could not be easier or prettier or more fragrant. A medium size Rugosa — some of them can get quite large! If you are not familiar with Rugosas, let me tell you there is not a more hardy, disease resistant family of roses.

THE 2016 LIST

Like many of you, I am now beginning to make a list of wants and needs for next year. One that is already on the list is my second Tahitian Treasure from Star Roses and Plants. She was a late bloomer and it took the 3 years for her to really show off. But this rose was fabulous this year. Pretty, fragrant, disease resistant and very long lasting in a vase!

Bloom Thyme Friday: The Winner’s Circle

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of speaking at the INDIANA/ILLINOIS Rose Society district meeting. Also on the program that day was Richard Anthony of For Love of Roses. Richard shared with us a presentation of his beautiful roses but, more than that, he brought many roses for us to see in person. Believe me, he has some beauties! And, I just had to share a few of those beauties with you.

If you are not familiar with Richard, let me introduce you…

Richard J. Anthony is a national level exhibitor with 106 Queens of Show (Yes, 106!!!) to his credit after 13 years of exhibiting roses. He has 4 National Queens and 9 District Queens as of the fall of 2014 rose season.

Richard and his partner, Brenna Bosch, work very hard to bring the best of the best miniature and miniflora roses which includes Richard’s own rose hybridizing efforts as well as several new roses from other hybridizers.

For some growing tips from Richard himself, read on.

Thanks to Andrew Hearne for the beautiful pictures on the For Love of Roses website.

Whether you are just interested in growing these lovely roses or are ready to throw your hat in the ring and try your hand at exhibiting, here are some of the top performers…

IN THE GARDEN THIS WEEK…

Leaves are falling like crazy and November is fast approaching but there are many roses in my garden that don’t seem to be affected by those facts at all. I can certainly understand why … while I was working in the garden Saturday, the temp skyrocketed to 80 degrees. This week has not been nearly that warm and today I don’t think we are going to get to 50 and the night time temps are dipping to the mid 30s. Burrrrr!

I seriously don’t remember having so many buds and blooms at this time of year before, and bringing in vases of roses at the end of October is FUN! As far as I’m concerned, winter can take it sweet time. Speaking of sweet, look at what’s blooming this week…

Wishing you a wonderful week….

Bloom Thyme Friday: Exchanging Plants

This week at our rose society meeting I made out like a bandit. Many members brought plants to share! Either their old roses had sent up suckers that are easy to share or they were thinning their rose or rose companion “inventory.”

Either way, while we were looking over the plants being offered, I observed that it doesn’t matter whether my fellow rose society members are 30 something or nearly 90, they are equally “over the moon” excited about getting something new for their garden. I love that!

Here are the lovelies that were shared with me…

As you know I am smitten with Rugosas in general, so getting to add 2 more fragrant blooming machines to my garden makes me very happy. I wrote about my other rugosas a few weeks ago when they were in full bloom and you can see the pictures here.

The Indianapolis Rose Show

The Indianapolis Rose Show was today. I have to say that when I woke up and looked at my extremely hot and dry garden, I wondered if there would be many roses at the rose show.

I love roses but have never been a rose exhibitor. However, I do love to see the perfect blooms on display! I shouldn’t have been concerned, the room was filled with beautiful roses. Since I know what our weather has been like, I could all the more appreciate each amazingly beautiful bloom. As visitors, we were allowed to vote on the most fragrant rose … don’t tell, but I voted for Double Delight. It is hard to beat that rose for fragrance! But, there were many tempting ones on the table!

Local rose shows are a great way to see beautiful roses, find out what grows well in your area, learn about rose culture and meet people who truly love roses. While at the show, I fell in love with two blooms … Marilyn Monroe and Hot Cocoa. Those were two roses I had never even considered before. They are now on my “2013 LIST!” And, I am looking for places that I might add them to my garden along side the other 95 or so.

On the way home from the show we stopped at a garden center. Not the best timing… kind of like going to the grocery store when you are hungry! Most of the roses they had left were less that desirable looking unless you were me in a weakened state where every rose looks desirable. I managed to make it out of the center with only one rose–a Tropicana who was also in a weakened state. We were meant to be together. I had Tropicana many years ago and have missed it. I am very glad to have this rose back in my garden.

She is now lovingly planted and has had her first dose of Moo Poo Tea. She will be on the mend and flourishing very soon.

Here are some beautiful roses…
